Christmas time is here... happiness and cheer...

I love The Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Doesn't matter what we are doing, if it's on network TV, we stop. Sure we have it on DVD, but there is something magical about it on the actual TV, with commercials and all. Remember the Santa riding the electric razor for Electric Shave..or was is Gillette? That is what I expect to see during the breaks. Maybe an commercial for Sears too...with avocado refrigerators on sale for the little lady.

A Charlie Brown Christmas was released in 1965. The year I was born. I love seeing that copyright date at the end of the show. Along with Charles Shultz's name..and I think Bill Mendelson's too. The sound track is perfect. Vince Guaraldi Trio. I wonder.. when they were asked to be a part of this Christmas cartoon, if they knew the power of the timing...the weight it would carry through out the years. Here we are in the 44th year of it's existence and it still has a beautiful effect on those who actually experience it. Really. The Charlie Brown Christmas Special is an experience. So much so that it made me buy the tree at Walgreen's the other day. I love that tree. The one red ornament that makes the needles fall off and Lucy and her friends call Charlie Brown some very un-Christmas-y things. Blockhead. Stupid. Then laugh at him. Even Snoopy laughs. jeeze.

Luke loves show too. When he was about 4 he would watch the DVD over and over. He would sing "Hark The Herald Angels Sing"..like they sing it on the very last scene of the movie. Here is how he would sing it, right after he yelled, "Merrry Christmas Charlie Brown!"... "Loo Loo Loo Loo Loo Loo Loo.. Hark the Herald Angels sing Glory to the new born King. Peace on Earth and Mercy Mile God and Sinners reconcile. Joyful all ye nations rise, join the triumph of the skies, with angelichosprclane Marci is born in Bethlehem Hark the Herald Angels sing, glory to the New Born King.."

yeah..Marci. Love it. We have a recording of him singing it that way too. Yippee for us to have something to play for his wedding...If you listen to the song on the DVD, it does sound like Marci. Now he is 8. There is no way we could get him to sing it for us. Plus, he would probably figure out the Marci part. But maybe not..we haven't been to church in a long time.

Now he loves to dance like Snoopy does when Schroeder is playing for Lucy. I should get that on Video for his wedding too.

So the movie takes us on a journey of joy, greed, insecurities, creativity, laughter, freedom and yes, Faith. All super politically incorrect for this age. Well..the faith part, I mean. So here we have the pinnacle of failure. Charlie Brown has disappointed the gang once again. Just by being true to himself and taking a chance on the underdog spruce. Thank God for Linus.. the coolest tiny dude of them all. That speech he just whips out, when everyone is trashing Charlie's tree. His purity and innocence and eloquence brings it all home. What with that blue blanket on his head. The same one he used to wrap the sad tree at the end. The same one he uses to snap a can off the wall.

"Isn't There Anyone, Who Knows What Christmas is All About?"

"Sure Charlie Brown. I can tell you what Christmas is all about. Lights Please."

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them,
Fear not, for behold, I bring you tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you;

Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying
in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.

"That's what Christmas is all about Charlie Brown."

Wishing you joy and love and Linus' voice in your head this Christmas and Holiday season.

  1. Thank you Tina for so eloquently sharing your insights with us once again. I cannot tell you how many times my 3 boys watched that show growing up...they never tired of it and neither did I. Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas to you, Walt and Luke.

  2. It just isn't a holiday without Charlie Brown! I have the holiday trio (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) as well as the Easter special. Love them all! And I, too, have the Charlie Brown tree! I searched high and low last year to no avail, but stumbled upon it this year and snatched it up. I keep joking that they should have also put a single light bulb on it hehe.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Walt, and Luke. And happy birthday to you and Walt as well! I love this time of year! We have Christmas on the 24th/25th, my sister's birthday on the 28th, New Year's on the 31st/1st, then my birthday on the 2nd. After all that, we just don't know what to do with ourselves when January 3rd rolls around :p
